Toxins in Clothing

Toxins in Clothing

My Organic Lifestyle

My upbringing wasn’t exactly what you call environmentally conscious and yet as long as I can remember I was drawn to everything Organic. I loved to go into Organic Food Stores. I just loved being surrounded by Organic Goodness. For myself, it was always about the feel, the smell, the aliveness and the energy. There was no particular belief or a conscious lifestyle choice behind it but I always had a strong pull to the Organic side of life. Because of this, I became aware of the dangers of synthetic chemicals, particularly clothe toxins.

The Creation of Elves in the Wardrobe

The creation of Elves in the Wardrobe led to a lot of research regarding the benefits of organic clothing. Needless to say, the choice to go Organic was the only conscious decision to make. My understanding and passion for Organic continue to grow. Essentially, we must all educate ourselves about the many clothe toxins that have the potential to harm our family. So, here are a few key points from an article by Gloria Gilbere, DAHom, PhD that I would like to share with you. You can read the full article here.

Clothe Toxins – Focus on Health

Our modern clothing industry is a 7 trillion dollar a year business. Incredibly, this industry uses around 8,000 different synthetic chemicals. The fact is, the more synthetic fibres we wear, the greater the risk for absorbing harmful clothing toxins. Moreover, far from being safe, synthetic fibres can cause contact dermatitis, respiratory diseases, infertility, and even cancers.

How Do We Absorb These CLOTHE Toxins?

The skin is your largest organ. So, chemicals that touch your skin have the potential to be absorbed into your lymphatic system and then your bloodstream. Consequently, if you’re exposing your skin to toxic chemicals via synthetic fibres, you can create a very dangerous environment for your body. Or worse, your children too. Furthermore, your skin vents about half a kilo of toxins each day. This natural process is interrupted by synthetic fibres as they effectively suffocate your skin and trap the toxins. Also, most people don’t realise that a lot of clothing toxins can’t simply be washed out. These chemicals include:

  • Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) including Teflon
  • Formaldehyde
  • Flame-retardants
  • Bacterial and Fungicidal Chemicals Triclosan and nano-particles

Choose Natural Fabrics like Organic Cotton

The King of Textiles is cotton, preferably organic. Even so, organic cotton only accounts for less than one per cent of global production. Also, other natural fibres to choose include:

  • Flax
  • Hemp
  • Silk
  • Wool (Organic)
  • Others;alpaca, angora, camel, cashmere, mohair, ramie, aluyot.

Don’t become overwhelmed, start small and gradually change your wardrobe one item at a time. Also, it’s a good idea to start with items that are closest to your skin such as underwear, t-shirts, sleepwear, pillows and sheets.
